Why you should visit...

Luquillo

Think pristine beaches with crystal clear waters, lush rainforests brimming with wildlife, and a culture that's all about living life to the fullest.

Why We Love It:

Luquillo, Puerto Rico, is a tropical paradise that’ll have you feeling all sorts of relaxed and rejuvenated. Less than an hour’s drive east from the capital San Juan, it’s a great spot to stay if you want the beauty of the island without the bustle of the big city.

This pretty little town has it all – crystal clear water, fun shops, lush hiking trails, an eclectic and exciting food scene, and North America’s only tropical rainforest.

  1. Beaches: Luquillo is known for its beautiful beaches, which are some of the best in PR. While Luquillo Beach and Monseratte Beach are the most popular – and quite beautiful! – the magic is at Playa Escondida or Hidden Beach. This is a 15-minute drive, followed by a fun and easy/intermediate 2.2-mile out-and-back trail. Once you reach the end of the mostly shaded hike, you reach a beautiful, narrow beach with clear waters and soft waves.
  2. Outdoor Activities: Luquillo is a fantastic place for outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities such as snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, and even folks renting Flyboarding equipment.  But the real gem of the area – and the island – is the rainforest, El Yunque. Whether you want to flex your athletic muscles with a 10-mile trek or ease your way into a .5-mile walk to a waterfall, this small but mighty area has you covered. El Yunque has several areas to dive into waters and a pretty sweet tower where you can view the beautiful rainforest as far as your eye can see.
  3. Food: Luquillo is famous for its food, particularly its street food. The town is home to a famous kiosk-lined street known as “La Pared,” where you can find a variety of Puerto Rican dishes such as fried plantains, empanadas, and fresh seafood. Stop at Terruno for 5-star food at 3-star prices, with live music, tasty local fare, and fun cocktails.
  4. Atmosphere: Luquillo is laid-back, making it a great place to unwind and relax. The town’s friendly locals and welcoming community also contribute to its charming ambiance. Coffee shops are great places to meet the locals, and Coffee Therapy has the perfect blend of lattes and laid-back appeal.

Whether you’re looking for a chill beach vacay or an adventure-packed trip, Luquillo has got you covered.
